Police block road after spirit spill

Traffic disrupted for 8 hours

Accident at eighth bend of Ghat road

KALPETTA: Traffic on the busy Kozhikode-Kollegal stretch of National Highway 212 was disrupted after a tanker lorry, loaded with spirit, overturned at the eighth bend on the Thamarassery Ghat section in Kozhikode district, late on Friday. The Thamarassery police blocked the road for nearly eight hours after the spirit spilled onto the road.

The tanker, headed to Thrissur from Karnataka, carrying spirit for the Kerala State Beverages Corporation, overturned when the driver was negotiating the sharp bend at 10 p.m., the police said. Three persons, including the driver and cleaner, were admitted to the Medical College Hospital, Kozhikode, with serious injuries, sources said.

Hundreds of people got stranded after the incident. One-way traffic was restored at 6 a.m. on Saturday. Long queues of vehicles could be seen throughout the night, sources said.
