KADAPA: Yogi Vemana University in Kadapa has embarked on a novel programme to reduce loss of bio-diversity and safeguard the irreplaceable natural flora in view of the year 2010 being observed as International Year of Bio-Diversity by taking up plantation of the invaluable red sander plant variety, with the nomenclature of Red Sandlia Plantarum, found predominantly in the reserve forests in Kadapa district and having widespread demand abroad. YVU Vice-Chancellor Arjula Ramachandra Reddy inaugurated the plantation at the botanical garden in the varsity, with plans to initially plant 10,000 saplings. Prof. Ramachandra Reddy called upon students of all the colleges in the district to raise such plantations to contribute their might and fulfil their responsibility to safeguard bio-diversity. Assistant Professor of Botany and in-charge of the botanical garden A. Madhusudana Reddy said plantation activity would be undertaken on the campus once in a fortnight. Registrar C. Sivarami Reddy, principal M. Ramakrishna Reddy and Dean Dhananjaya Naidu were present.
