Global meet on ‘Crisis and Hegemonic Dilemmas'

NEW DELHI: World-renowned political and economic experts will participate in a three-day conference on “The Global Crisis and Hegemonic Dilemmas'' beginning here on Monday at the India International Centre.

Political science research professor from the University of California, Perry Anderson; Professor of history and sociology from the York University in Toronto, Leo Panitch; and Professor of sociology at New York University Vivek Chibber will participate in the opening discussion on “The Global Crisis and Hegemonic Dilemmas.'' It will be chaired by the former Minister of Panchayati Raj, Mani Shankar Aiyer.

Professor of economics at the New School University in New York Anwar Shaikh; JNU professor Deepak Nayyar; and economist Jayati Ghosh will participate in the afternoon session on “The Global Economic Crisis and its Implications.'' It will be chaired by economist and independent researcher Jaya Mehta.

On day 2, Director of the Institute of Globalisation and Social Movements in Moscow, Boris Kagarlitsky; Research scholar in Chinese Studies at the University of California, Chaohua Wang; and columnist Anand Swaroop Verma will participate in a discussion on “Emerging Powers: Allies or Rivals.'' Chairperson of the Indian Council of Social Science Research, Javeed Alam will chair the discussion.

The afternoon session will see a discussion on “The Zone of Turbulence: West and Central Asia.” The participants will be Director of Alternative Information Centre at Jerusalem, Israel, Michael Warchawski; Anuradha Chenoy of the Centre for Russian and Central Asian Studies, JNU; and independent journalist and columnist, Praful Bidwai. The session will be chaired by Neera Chandoke from the Political Science Department of the University of Delhi.

On Day 3, Emeritus Research Director in Social Sciences at the National Centre of Scientific Research at Paris, Michael Lowy; senior research fellow at the Institute for Critical Social Analysis in Berlin, Erhard Crome; and Achin Vanaik of the Department of Political Science, University of Delhi will discuss “Towards a Socialist Alternative: Reorienting the Left.” The session will be chaired by Kamal Mitra Chenoy of the School of International Studies at JNU.

The conference has been organised by the Indian Council for Social Science Research, Indian Council for Philosophical Research, Department of Political Science of the University of Delhi, Department of Sociology of New York University and the Popular Education and Action Centre.
