Ten years, still steadfast

IRON WILL: Irom Sharmila being offered candles by her well-wishers on the occasion of Diwali and the completion of 10 years of fasting, at the Jawaharlal Nehru Hospital in Imphal on Friday. Ms. Sharmila has been on indefinite hunger-strike since November 2000 demanding the repeal of the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act, 1958. She began her non-violent protest after the Assam Rifles personnel shot dead 10 villagers in Imphal town.
