The Athens Classic Marathon is one of the most prestigious marathon races in the world as it is run on the route of the original marathon race, from the village of Marathon to the city of Athens. This year's marathon was even more special as it marked the 2,500 years since the original run was held. Hyderabad had the distinction of sending the largest contingent from India, with about 20 runners completing the gruelling run. Mr. Ramesh, ACB Joint Director said, “The spirit of running a marathon is similar to what policemen do in any job – to overcome all obstacles and surmount all challenges. I ran the marathon as a testimony to the strength of our force and as a tribute to the numerous policemen who laid down their lives in upholding the values of democracy and in maintaining peace and harmony in society.”
