Woman Maoist surrenders

Staff Reporter

VISAKHAPATNAM: A woman Maoist Sindhri Kondamma alias Nirmala, 18, surrendered before the Superintendent of Police Vineet Brij Lal here on Saturday.

A native of Kannavaram village of Budharalla panchayat in Koyyuru mandal, Kondamma belongs to the Kondu tribe, a Primitive Tribal Group (PTG). She had joined as a militia member, influenced by the revolutionary songs of the Maoists, when she was barely 14 in 2006.

Producing her before the media on Saturday, Mr. Vineet Brij Lal wondered as to how far the Maoists were justified in enrolling minor boys and girls into their fold and giving them weapon training. The rights of tribal children were being trampled upon by the Maoists but the Human Rights organisationswere not even raising their voice in support of the tribal children. The SP said that the United Nations Organisations (UNO) had also expressed concern at the suppression of tribal children's rights by the Maoists in India.

He said that the police had information that around 10 minor boys and girls were recruited by the Maoists in Visakhapatnam district. She informed Maoist leader Krishna about her decision and surrendered her .303 rifle and 20 bullets when the Dalam was near Rallametta and Kinnerla villages two months ago. She surrendered on the call of the SP that no cases would be booked against surrendered Maoists.

Mr. Vineet Brij Lal said that Kondamma was involved in seven cases. These include: the famine raids on the house of Cheedipalli Lakshmayya and Cheedigondi Bhaskara Raoand the landmine blast on the police party at Gunukurai, encounter at Killamkota. Additional SP B. Sudharshana Rao was also present.
