Pandit Ajay Pohankar
MANGALORE: People in the region will get a chance to listen to one of the senior Hindustani vocalists on Wednesday and Thursday.
Ajay Pohankar will perform at the Silver Jubilee Auditorium on the NITK campus at Surathkal at 6 p.m. on the day and next day at Narayana Guru Sabhagraha, Haleyangadi at 10.30 a.m. and at Manipal University at 6.30 p.m. under a Spic Macay programme.
He performed at the Vivekananda College of Engineering and Technology at Puttur on Monday at 4.30 p.m.
The versatile exponent from the Kirana Ghana (Pt. Bhimsen Joshi belongs to this tradition), Pt. Pohankar vibes well with the Patiala and Gwaliar Gharanas too. A much sought-after artiste, he has rendered khyal, thumris, ghazals and has participated in fusion music shows.
Born in 1947, his music career spans five decades and he was conferred Sangeet Praveen in 1959, Surmani in 1970, Maharashtra Rajya Sanskritik Puraskar in 2006, the Narayana Sanman and the Manik Puraskar in 2008.
His mother Susheela Pohankar was a musicologist. Mr. Pohankar was introduced to the world of classical music at the age of 10 by Ustad Amir Khan in 1958.
