Chinmaya Vidyalaya bags regional cup

The Hindu Young World Quiz 2010 gets an overwhelming response in Hubli

HUBLI: Class 9 students Vishal A. Kulkarni and Srujan J. Shukla from Chinmaya Vidyalaya, Hubli, emerged victorious in the regional final of The Hindu Young World Quiz 2010, which was held here for the first time on Monday.

The 11th edition of the national-level event, held at the auditorium of the Deshpande Centre for Social Entrepreneurship located on the campus of BVB College of Engineering College and Technology, received an overwhelming response with as many as 205 teams from 55 schools from the districts of Dharwad, Haveri, Bagalkot, Bellary, Davangere, Belgaum and Bijapur participating in it.

The winners will now represent the Hubli region in the grand finale of the quiz, which will be held in Chennai on November 25.

The winners take home a cash prize of Rs. 50,000 and Tata Nano cars.

The event, which evoked equal interest among parents and teachers, saw a keenly contested regional final with Chinmaya Vidyalaya closely followed by Rashtrotthana Vidya Kendra, Dharwad, until the final question. The team from Rashtrotthana Vidya Kendra, comprising Pareekshit H.S. and Akarsh Hosmani, fell nine points behind to become the first runner-up.

Runners-up

The Kendriya Vidyalaya team from Dharwad fared well initially, but faltered midway and ended up in the second runner-up position. Kendriya Vidyalaya No. 3 of Belgaum finished close behind KV, Dharwad, in fourth place. Dr. G.V.J. Rotary High School and Adarsh Chetan Public School finished in fifth and sixth positions respectively. Quizmaster V.V. Ramanan hosted the show in his trademark style, engaging the students throughout the event. Before giving away the trophies and goodies to the finalists and winners, the chief guest, Deputy Commissioner Darpan Jain, asked the students to not to accept everything without question. “Respect your elders, but don't accept anything without testing or analysing it thoroughly,” he advised.

The young IAS officer told the students to make use of the facilities and information available.

Prizes

All the finalists received trophies from The Hindu, and a lot of goodies from the sponsors. The winner of the Hubli regional final will get a cash prize of Rs. 15,000.

The first and second runners-up get cash prizes of Rs. 12,000 and Rs. 10,000, respectively. The last three finalist teams get cash prize of Rs. 2,000 each.

There were prizes for the audience as well during the event, which went on for more than three hours. Earlier, a preliminary written test was held to select the six regional finalists.

Tata Motors Ltd. is the car sponsor.

The 2010 edition was managed by i-Ads and Events.

Hotel Ananth Residency, JBM Industries, Creative Solutions (all from Hubli) and Top Ramen Noodles were the regional sponsors.
