KOCHI: Eldhose Kunnappally of the UDF was elected as the Ernakulam District Panchayat president here on Monday, by a margin of 16 votes.
He won 20 votes while M. B. Syamendabhadran of the LDF secured four votes. Two votes were declared invalid. He was sworn in by District Collector M. Beena. Bindu George, also of the UDF, would be the vice-president of the District Panchayat. She got 22 votes while LDF's Bindu Sabu won four votes. All 26 members were present at the election.
Speaking after the swearing in, Mr Kunnappaly said that he would adopt an apolitical approach to redress the grievances of people from backward sections of society. “The District Panchayat would accord top priority to build good roads and to ensure that everybody had access to potable water and power supply.
The numerous quarries and waterbodies in the district are rich sources of potable water. The help of experts in different fields would be sought to improve people's quality of life,” he said.
Mr. Kunnappally's name was proposed by UDF's M. J. Tomy Eldhose and supported by Babu Joseph, while Mr. Syamendabhadran's name was proposed by LDF's Yesudas Parapilly and supported by Bindu Sabu.
