This Day That Age
Senator John Kennedy of the Democratic Party was on November 9 elected the 35 {+t} {+h} President of the United States by one of the closest popular margins in American history over his Republican rival, Vice-President Nixon. The Democratic Party also retained its control over both Houses of the Federal Legislature and a majority of State Governorship. At forty-three, Mr. Kennedy will be the youngest elected President of the United States: Mr. Theodore Roosevelt became President when forty-two, but he ascended that office from Vice-Presidentship when President Mackinley was assassinated. Mr. Kennedy is also the first Catholic to be elected President and there he can find extra satisfaction from the fact, that the man he defeated Mr. Nixon, is a Quaker.
