“Decision on alliance after consulting DMK workers”

Special Correspondent

Chennai: Seeking unity and solidarity at all levels to emerge victorious in the next Assembly elections, Chief Minister and DMK president M. Karunanidhi said on Monday that the party would take a decision on alliances in consultation with party workers.

Addressing a meeting of MLAs at the party headquarters on Monday, Mr. Karunanidhi said media reports could be misleading but a decision on alliances with the Congress, Left parties, PMK or other parties could not be taken at the MLAs' meeting.

After discussing the merits of each party, a time would come to ask party men their opinion on alliance with each party.

Decisions on alliances would be taken only in consultation with the MLAs, MPs, general council, executive council and other committees.

The party will never take decisions in haste, he said, promising to be democratic in the decision-making process. Reminding the MLAs that there were still four to five months for the elections, he said victory was certain. The party leaders — from councillors, MLAs, MPs to Ministers — must stay united, he stressed.

There could be differences among MLAs or Ministers but leaders should understand that it was the result of misunderstanding and not arising out of ideological differences, Mr. Karunanidhi said pointing out that the party had lost out a few times in the past due to groupism. Leader of the Opposition Jayalalithaa had instructed her MPs not to be against the Congress as she was working for an alliance with that party. “Jayalalithaa will not succeed in her efforts,” he said.
