VISAKHAPATNAM: The Asia Cooperation Dialogue (ACD) has significant potential for cooperation in areas like transfer of technology, clean development mechanisms, climate change mitigation, etc., said Union Minister of State for HRD D. Purandeswari at the two-day ninth ACD ministerial meeting that concluded in Tehran on Tuesday. These areas were capital and technology intensive and needed attention, Ms. Purandeswari, who led the Indian delegation, said. The meeting, held with the theme ‘towards Asian solidarity and integrity-promoting prosperity, peace and justice', discussed 19 issues like agriculture, economic help, education, IT and elimination of poverty to discuss improving cooperation and all-round development of the region. The meeting felt that Asian countries would lead the world in many areas in future and that they should not get influenced by other cultures, but protect their own. The Indian delegation wanted more efforts made towards poverty alleviation and more cooperation between the nations in the face of world-wide financial crisis. Ms. Purandeswari spoke about the Indian initiative in biotechnology and said the Regional Centre established at Faridabad with UNESCO help would also offer scholarships. India was also planning to host an intra-ACD tourism seminar during September 2011 towards promoting people-to-people contact.
