Cricket JAC to boost genuine talent from Telangana

Talent in region not being given due importance and exposure: legislators

HYDERABAD: The newly-formed Telangana Cricket Joint Action Committee on Sunday decided to intensify its efforts to ensure ‘justice' to genuine talent from the region.

Legislators A. Revanth Reddy, Etala Rajender, K. Harishwar Reddy, Bhanu Prasad, MLC, strongly believed that talent in Telangana region was not being given due importance and exposure.

They alleged that the Hyderabad Cricket Association was virtually controlled by those with origins from Andhra or other States.

“The recent dismal showing against Rajasthan should be the final reminder that it is time that HCA sets its house in order,” was their opinion. “How can you expect justice when 75 per cent of the nominated posts in HCA are enjoyed by those other than from Telangana,” they argued. “The first thing is that the HCA should ensure that there is equitable distribution of funds from the BCCI to districts and the clubs in the twin cities. Every Telangana district should have at least 20 clubs in the HCA and that all the club secretaries of different clubs should be from the region,” the MLAs demanded. Jimmy Babu, chairman, said the JAC would submit a memorandum to Sports Minister Komatireddy Venkata Reddy on Nov. 8.

“Giving regional colour to the whole functioning of HCA is unfortunate,” argued Arshad Ayub, HCA president. “We are focussed in ensuring that genuine talent is not left to drift away in the region. We are already in the process of promoting talent in a big way in Telangana. We have started the process of purchasing lands in districts to have exclusive cricket grounds and are determined to give a new dimension to the sport there.”

“I don't think there will be any problem for the second Test match between India and New Zealand here from November 12. In fact, it is a question of pride that the Test is being played in Telangana. We can demonstrate how successfully we can stage a sporting event,” he remarked.
