Court rejects Monica's double jeopardy plea

Legal Correspondent

NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court on Tuesday upheld the conviction of actor Monica Bedi, girlfriend of the underworld don Abu Salem, in a fake passport case but reduced her imprisonment to the period already undergone.

A Bench of Justices B. Sudershan Reddy and S.S. Nijjar rejected Ms. Bedi's contention that she could not be convicted in India as she had already been convicted for the same offence by a Portugal court, and that this would amount to ‘double jeopardy.'
