Meet on accounting this month

Special Correspondent

The conference will share views of contemporary importance relating to accounting policies.

Thiruvananthapuram: The Department of Commerce, University of Kerala, in association with the Kerala branch of the Indian Accounting Association, is hosting the 33rd All India Accounting Conference and international seminar on Accounting Education and Research here on November 13 and 14 as part of the silver jubilee of the department.

About 1,000 delegates from within the country and abroad are expected to participate. The conference is expected to provide a forum for accounting professionals, academics, industrialists, students and scholars to exchange views on issues of contemporary importance relating to accounting policies and standards.

Addressing a press conference here on Monday, Dr. K.Sasikumar, Conference Secretary, Professor and Head, Department of Commerce, University of Kerala, said India was preparing to adopt global accounting standards with effect from 2011.

Global standards

“India is set to become IFRS (International Financial Reporting Standards) compliant by 2011. The heightened awareness about environmental and ethical issues among the different stakeholders of corporate organisations is forcing companies to adopt good business practices and act in a socially responsible and environmentally sustainable way. The current initiatives by the government to introduce some major tax reforms relating to goods and services have also evoked considerable interest among the accounting community. The conference will provide a platform for addressing these concerns.”

The broad themes of the technical sessions include Convergence of Accounting Standards, Corporate Governance and Business Ethics and Goods and Services Tax.

The conference is scheduled to be inaugurated by Dr. Thomas Isaac, Minister for Finance. The inaugural function will be presided over by Prof. (Dr) G.L. Dave, president, Indian Accounting Association.

The international seminar on Accounting Education and Research is expected to bridge the gap between theory and practice and also provide vital inputs for research in accounting.

The seminar will have Prof. (Dr.) M.B. Shukla of Kasi Vidyapeet, Varanasi, as Chairman and Prof. (Dr.) Sudipti Banerjea of the University of Calcutta as the co-chairperson. Prof (Dr.) Thenmozhi of IIT Chennai and Dr. Hardy Thomas of University of ESSEX, London, will deliver the keynote addresses. About 16 research papers are lined up for presentation at the seminar.

The valedictory function scheduled for November 14 will have Dr. Prabhat Patnaik, Vice-Chairman of the State Planning Board, as the chief guest. He will distribute the awards for the best research paper, best professional member and the best Keralite entrepreneur.
