Childline's care for distresed highlighted

Childline Se Dosti campaign aims at creating awareness of child rights, protection

TIRUCHI: Details of the outreach service rendered by the Childline for children in need of care and protection were disseminated to police personnel by speakers at the ‘Childline Se Dosti – Children's Day celebrations' organised at the Police In-service Training Centre here on Wednesday.

The aim of the ‘Childline Se Dosti' campaign launched by the Childline across the country in an effort to create awareness among the community of child protection and child rights and to make ordinary citizens stakeholders in Childline was also highlighted by the speakers during the programme that was organised by the Childline.

In his presidential address, J. Godwin Prem Singh, Director, Childline Nodal Organisation, Department of Social Work, Bishop Heber College, Tiruchi said the Childline had been providing assistance to children in distress in Tiruchi for over 10 years now.

Runaway children rescued by the Childline field level staff were being given food and shelter at the Childline centre before reuniting them with their parents or near ones.

Launched in 84 cities

The Childline service launched in 84 cities and districts had been successful in responding to the needs of children in distress, he said adding that a child marriage had been successfully stopped in Tiruchi.

The Director, SOC SEAD, Rev. Sr. Mariakamalam said the Childline had been receiving active support from the law enforcers ever since the service was launched in Tiruchi over a decade ago.

Active support

The Deputy Superintendent of Police, Police In-service Training Centre, Tiruchi P. Kamala said the Childline had been providing active support to those children in need of parent protection.

Family feuds was among the reasons for the trend of children running away from their homes, she said while calling upon police personnel to deal with such children with compassion and politeness so as to ascertain the root of the problem before reuniting them with their parents.
