CPI(M) given permission for procession on Nov.30 though BJP had planned a rally the same day “Government will be held responsible if there is a breakdown of the law and order situation” Kolkata: The West Bengal unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party on Thursday accused the State Government of trying to “stifle the Opposition's voice” by allowing the Communist Party of India (Marxist) to hold a rally in the city on November 30 even though the BJP had declared two months back its decision to take out a mass procession on the same date. The BJP leadership claimed that it had declared on September 30 to organise a march to the State Secretariat on November 10 in protest against the State Government's decision to hike power tariff and make reservations based on religion. Meanwhile, the CPI (M) has announced that it would observe “North Bengal-Jangal Mahal-Sundarbans Day” on November 10 as the last of a series of party programmes to be launched on November 24. Saying that this action of the CPI (M) points towards its “lack of political ethics”, Rahul Sinha, president of the State unit of the BJP, asserted that his party would carry on with its pre-scheduled programme. ‘Insulting advice' Mr. Sinha also alleged that a section of the city police officers is playing a partisan role in the matter as the latter reportedly said that the BJP's march to the Secretariat can create law and order problem in the city. “When a BJP delegation recently met the Commissioner of the City Police Goutam Mohan Chakrabarti regarding the issue, he advised them to speak to CPI (M) leader Biman Basu and solve the matter amicably. This is highly insulting for us,” he said. Mr. Sinha further stated that the State Government would be held responsible if there was a breakdown of the law and order situation.
