Separate directorate for higher secondary education sought

Staff Reporter

Tirupur: The head teachers and teachers of government higher secondary schools came out into the streets on Wednesday to press for their charter of demands pertaining to wages and service conditions, among others.

At an agitation held in front of the Corporation office here, the teachers urged the State Government to increase their salaries on a par with the corresponding scales allocated for college lecturers.

Likewise, other perks allocated to lecturers and Central Government employees too should be extended to the higher secondary school teachers.

Tamil Nadu Post-Graduate Teachers Association district vice-president S. Karnen said that the government should also designate the post of headmaster/headmistress of the higher secondary schools as ‘principal'.

The need for creating a separate directorate for higher secondary education alone too figured high in the requisition list. “At present, the higher secondary education is governed by the Directorate of School Education which looks into the affairs of a broad segment ranging from Standard VI to XII,” he said.

The teachers also wanted the State Government to withdraw the contributory pension scheme. The other major demands included creation of at least 10 additional posts of post-graduate teachers in all the recently upgraded higher secondary schools in the district.
