Bus crew held for drinking liquor

KOLLAM: A surprise check by the police on private buses in Kollam city and suburbs, after dusk on Thursday, revealed that a good number of the crew, including drivers, was under the influence of alcohol. Police said that drivers and conductors who were on duty after consuming alcohol were arrested, and the buses seized.

The check was conducted following a tip-off received by Kollam DySP B. Krishnakumar. As per the information received, commuters, especially women were finding it uncomfortable to travel in private buses after dusk. In some instances, friends of the bus crew, also under the influence of alcohol, occupied ladies' seats. The police said that in one instance during Friday's check, the crew of a private bus was found consuming liquor after parking the bus with passengers at the Kottiyam ESI Junction. Three members of the crew were arrested. Their names were given as Unni, Ravikumar and Shafeek.

Police said that Ajayakumar, driver of the bus Lulu plying on the Bharanikavu-Kolam route, Sajeev, driver of the bus Chinnu plying on the Chavara-Elampallur route, Shini, driver of the bus Thoppil plying on the Elampallur-Chavara route, Suresh, driver of the bus Edakkad plying on the Chavara-Asramam route, Manjulal, driver of the bus Shailaja plying on the Uliayakovil-Chavara route and Varghese, driver of the bus plying on the Chathannur-Cherupoyka route were arrested for drunk driving. The buses were also taken into custody.
