KOCHI: Kerala is way behind other South Indian States in utilising the grant offered by the Japanese government, said Yuko Murakami, Japanese Consul in Chennai. She was addressing an awareness meeting organised here on Tuesday for representatives of non-government organisations. The meeting was organised by the Alumni Society of Association of Overseas Technical Scholarship (AOTS) here for explaining the scheme of Grant Assistance for Grassroots Projects (GGP). The Japanese government provided assistance for 99 projects in the southern States, of which only nine were from Kerala. Last year, 20 projects were given funds, but there was none from Kerala, said Ms. Murakami. Explaining the GGP scheme, the consul said grants of up to 10 million Japanese Yen or about Rs.45 lakh each were available for community development projects that directly benefit people at the grassroots level. Projects in the areas of basic health care, primary education and adult literacy, poverty alleviation, safe drinking water and sanitation, women's empowerment, child welfare – including support for street children and elimination of child labour — support for disabled and conservation of environment were eligible for the aid. Projects for creating infrastructure like school, hostel for students, hospitals and vocational training centres and for acquiring medical and training equipment would be considered. Non-profit organisations registered with either the Union or State government and with at least two years of activities in the area for which aid is applied for can submit applications round the year to the Consulate-General of Japan, No.12/1, Cenatoph Road First Street, Teynampet, Chennai - 600018.
