Steps on for fishermen's release: Minister

Special Correspondent

CHENNAI: Fisheries Minister K.P.P. Samy on Friday told the Assembly that the State government was taking steps to secure the release of 43 Tamil fishermen lodged at a prison in Qatar.

Responding to AIADMK member D. Jayakumar, who raised the issue, the Minister said three countries were involved in the issue.

They had gone to Saudi Arabia and from there to Qatar. Congress whip Peter Alphonse said he had already taken up the issue with External Affairs Minister S.M. Krishna. AIADMK deputy leader O. Panneerselvam said the employer of the fishermen had secured the boat, but not the fishermen.

Cell phones

To another question on smuggling of cell phones into various prisons in the State, Law Minister Durai Murugan said 261 SIM cards had been secured in the last 11 months.

Ganja was seized from 93 persons.
