Emergency rescue tender for Tiruchi Fire Division

R. Rajaram

TIRUCHI: An Emergency Rescue Tender (ERT) which would be utilised exclusively for rescue operations has been sanctioned for Tiruchi Fire Division.

The ERT, which would be stationed at Tiruchi fire station, would be equipped with necessary paraphernalia including metal cutter, lock cutter, spreader, lifting bag and life jackets.

The equipment forming part of the ERT has already been supplied to the Tiruchi Fire Division and the vehicle is expected to be provided soon.

The Tiruchi Fire Division has under its jurisdiction eight fire stations at Tiruchi, Srirangam Navalpattu, Lalgudi, Pullambadi, Manapparai, Thuvarankurichi and Uppiliapuram.

Costing Rs. 50 lakh, the ERT would be used during rescue operations such as building collapse and road accidents and equipped with sensors to detect persons caught under the debris.

The Divisional Fire Officer, Tiruchi, G. Elango, said two new fire tenders had been provided — with one each for Tiruchi and Navalpattu fire stations.

The new fire tenders for Tiruchi and Navalpattu, which would be fitted with the Global Positioning System, are replacements for the old vehicles, which have been condemned.

The Tiruchi fire station which has at present three fire tenders would be provided with a foam tender which would be utilised exclusively for putting out oil fire. Mr. Elango said the fire accident reported in Tiruchi fire station due to bursting of crackers on the Deepavali festival day this year was the lone incident in Tiruchi Fire Division.

He said adding that 70 fire accidents were reported during the 2009 Deepavali.
