‘Subaltern theatre losing revolutionary zeal'

KOLKATA: Pointing out that the voice of “subaltern” portrayed in theatres across India is increasingly falling “silent”, veteran Marathi playwright Govind Purushottam Deshpande said here on Saturday that the subconscious imitation of middle-class theatre practices by the subaltern theatre is one of the main reasons behind it. He was delivering the keynote address at a national symposium on ‘The Subaltern in Indian Theatre' organised by theatre group Aneek in collaboration with the Department of English of Calcutta University and with assistance from the Union Culture Ministry.

Emphasising on the true meaning of subaltern in Indian context, Prof. Amiya Kumar Bagchi, First Chancellor, Tripura Central University, said Italian writer Antonio Gramsci had used the term several times to denote subordinate classes and groups who are ruled by groups with hegemonic ideologies.
