Month-long ‘annadana' at Talacauvery opposed

Staff Correspondent

‘It is against the established traditions'

Madikeri: A few representatives of Kodava Samaja units on Saturday urged the Deputy Commissioner to stop the month-long “annadana” at Talacauvery being offered by the Kodagu Ekikarana Ranga (KER), stating that it was against the established traditions and sanctity of the place. Addanda C. Cariappa, former president of the Ponnampet Kodava Samaja, told presspersons here that Talacauvery was a unique pilgrim centre.

Legend has it that sage Agatsya conducted penance there and the Cauvery flowed as “guptagamini” until she emerged at Nagateerta some distance below the sanctum sanctorum. “Annadana” on the day of teertodbhva was alright, but not for a month, he said. The ranga commenced “annadana” on October 17 and it will end on November 17. Mr. Cariappa alleged that the Brahmagiri hills above the sanctum sanctorum was losing its sanctity. The area could not be turned into a picnic spot. The Muzrai Department should take note of these developments and crack the whip. Small hotels at Talacauvery contributed to the defilement of the area, he said.

Kabbachira Prabhu Subramani, treasurer of the Akhila Kodava Samaja, endorsed his views. Kundyolanda Ramesh Muddaiah, former president of the Madikeri taluk APMC, said some organisations were working against the interests of Kodagu.

He opposed the move to get World Heritage Site tag for three wildlife sanctuaries and two reserve forests in the district.
