Tragedy:The portion of the house which collapsed on Ponni Nagar Main Road in Madurai on Sunday.. — MADURAI: Three persons including an infant died on the spot when the wall of a dwelling collapsed in the early hours of Sunday. Police said that Kannan, a casual worker in a rice mill at Pechiamman Padithurai was living with his wife Pushpalatha (24), mother-in-law Usharani (55) and child Vishnu (one-and-half-year old) on Ponni Nagar Main Road. As they were all fast asleep, Kannan is understood to have noticed cracks in the roof and attempted to get out at around 3 a.m. Within a few minutes, when he came out, the side wall of the dwelling reportedly collapsed killing Pushpalatha, Usharani and Vishnu on the spot. Fire and rescue services personnel rushed to the spot and removed the debris. The bodies were sent to Government Rajaji Hospital for post-mortem. S.S. Colony police have registered a case and are investigating. Collector C. Kamaraj presented a cheque for Rs.1 lakh each to the legal heirs of the family members in the presence of Deputy Mayor P.M. Mannan. Revenue Divisional Officer S. Sugumaran, Tahsildar A. Kamalasekaran were among those present.
