‘Media should concentrate on factual reporting to protect the interests of society' Two senior journalists felicitated on the occasion PANAJI: Goa Chief Minister Digambar Kamat has asked the media fraternity to introspect and always go by their conscience before wielding their pens. The Chief Minister was addressing presspersons at the National Press Day celebrations organised by the State Department of Information and Publicity in association with the Goa Editors' Guild and the Goa Union of Journalists (GUJ) here on Tuesday. “Journalists are part and parcel of society. Media plays an important role in democracy and, therefore, journalists should concentrate on factual reporting to protect the interests of society,” Mr. Kamat remarked. The theme of the celebration was “Media in the era of globalisation and competition: challenges and opportunities”. Swati Deshpande, Editor (Law), Times of India, Mumbai; Menino Peres, Director of Information and Publicity; Sudesh Arlekar, Secretary, GUJ; and others were present on the occasion. Mr. Kamat said society expected a lot from the media. Although the media had witnessed a lot of transformation, its core function of working in the interests of society had not changed. Narendra Kumar, Secretary, Information and Publicity, who presided over the function, said media is the instrument through which information is disseminated to people on various aspects. Ms. Deshpande, in her keynote address said media played a significant role in the globalised world. It was also a watchdog and the voice of society and contributed immensely in transforming it. “Media is also one of the best instruments to enlighten people, expose social issues and help the masses reap the benefits of government schemes and facilities,” she stated. The Chief Minister felicitated two senior journalists Arun Bhathkande and Sharad Tendulkar for their contribution to journalism.
