Extend loans to tenant farmers: Collector

Staff Reporter

‘Need to provide loans of Rs 100 cr a month to women SHGs'

He stresses need for conducting special melas to disburse loans

Agriculture loans are being used for non-agriculture activities by many farmers, he says

KAKINADA: Calling upon the bankers to come forward to provide loans to the tenant farmers and members of the women self-help groups, district Collector M. Ravi Chandra on Tuesday said that the bankers must keep in mind that 70 per cent of the population of the district was eking out a livelihood from agriculture and tenant farmers formed a major part of it.

Reviewing the functioning of the banks in the last six months here, Mr. Ravi Chandra said that the banks needed to provide loans to the tune of Rs. 100 crore per month to the women self-help groups in the next four months of the financial year to reach the target of disbursing Rs. 605 crore to the segment.

Observing that there was a drop in the disbursement of loans to the SHGs, as compared to the previous years, he stressed the need for conducting special melas to distribute the loans.

Referring to the agriculture, Mr. Ravi Chandra said that farmers needed financial support from the banks very badly, as they lost the standing crop to the recent cyclone. “Unless the banks come forward to distribute loans to farmers and members of the SHGs, it will be very difficult to save them from the clutches of the Microfinance Institutions,” he said.

Observing that agriculture loans were being used for non-agriculture activities by many farmers, he said that distribution of loans to the joint liability groups formed by the tenant farmers would be of great help to majority farmers.

Additional Joint Collector B. Rama Rao, Project Director of the District Rural Development Agency K. Madhukar Babu, Lead Bank Manager N. Jagannadha Raju and other officials were present.
