Special occasion:Principal Accountant General (Accounts and Entitlements) S. Prabhu (left), Governor H.R. Bhardwaj and the former Minister Bangalore: Governor H.R. Bhardwaj has commended the Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) for “upholding the rule of law”. Delivering the inaugural address at an event held to mark the 150th anniversary of the establishment of the office of the CAG here on Tuesday, Mr. Bhardwaj said institutions such as the Election Commission of India and the CAG were “fundamental requirements of Indian democracy because they establish checks and balances on executive authority.” Mr. Bhardwaj said the CAG ensures that the money raised from the people by way of taxes was spent efficiently and appropriately. “These safeguards are needed to ensure that resources are used for the purpose they are raised,” he added. The Principal Accountant General (Accounts and Entitlements), S. Prabhu, said, “Although the CAG was established by the colonial administration, it has evolved into an integral part of Indian democracy.” The Principal Accountant General (Civil and Commercial Audit), S. Bhadre, said the information technology initiatives implemented by the CAG had “enabled it to play a much more dynamic role.”
