YOUNG VICTIM:Workers carry the body of a child during the rescue work on Tuesday at the site where a building collapsed at Laxmi Nagar in New Delhi. KOLKATA: The West Bengal government will give compensation to construction workers from the State who were killed in the building collapse in east Delhi on Monday and help in the treatment of those injured, State Labour Minister Anadi Sahu announced. Terming the incident unfortunate, Mr. Sahu told reporters at the Secretariat on Tuesday that as per his information, 24 persons from West Bengal — 19 from Murshidabad and four from Malda — were killed in the building collapse. “A majority of them were construction workers, and the Construction Industry Welfare Board has decided to pay compensation of Rs.1 lakh each to the families of those killed and up to Rs.30,000 to those injured,” Mr. Sahu said. The district magistrates have been given instructions to contact the families so that the welfare board can do the needful. Mr. Sahu mentioned in this context that earlier, the families of four construction workers from the State who were killed by extremists in Manipur were also given similar relief. Civil Defence Minister Srikumar Mukherjee said steps were being taken to bring back the bodies of those killed in the building collapse. He said two teams were ready to leave for New Delhi in case they were needed.
