Rohith Madhu shocks Karthik

Mysore: Unseeded Tamil Nadu lad Rohith Madhu played a consistent game on both the flanks to shock fourth seeded S. Karthik of Karnataka 6-4, 6-4 and enter the boys' under-14 singles quarterfinals on the second-day of the Rotary Mysore sponsored AITA Talent Series tennis tournament at the MTC courts here on Tuesday.

All the other seeded players, B.R. Nikshep, S. Kishen, C. Vasisht (all Karnataka), M. Arjun, M. Harish Chakravarthy and R. Ramakrishnan (all from Tamil Nadu) sailed into the boys under-14 singles quarterfinals registering easy wins over their respective rivals.

Sharp showers in the evening forced the organisers to abandon further matches slated for the day.

The results: Boys (pre-quarterfinals): Under-14: B.R. Nikshep bt Abhijeeth Kiran 6-1, 6-2; M. Arjun bt K.A. Rohan Devaiah 6-2, 6-3; S. Kishen bt K.S. Chiranthan 6-0, 6-0; M. Harish Chakravarthy bt M.S. Darshan 6-4, 6-0; Rohith Madhu bt S. Karthik 6-4, 6-4; C. Vasisht bt K.S. Dashrath 6-0, 6-0; R. Ramakrishnan bt Varun Venkat 6-1, 6-1.

Under-16: Anthony Savio bt Ramkumar Gautham 6-4, 6-1; Alok Aradhya bt Karthik Bharadwaj 6-2, 6-3; Nikshep bt H.N. Vivek Chandra 6-2, 6-3; Mahesh Bhatija bt Venkataraman 6-3, 6-2.

Girls (quarterfinals): Under-14: C.S. Praneetha bt Madhumita Meenakshi 6-1, 6-0; Gopika Madhu bt S. Harshitha 6-3, 3-6, 6-0; T. Shryashree bt M. Jyothi 6-4, 6-3.

Under-16: Madhumita bt Ashika D Urs 6-0, 6-0 .

KV Hebbal prevails

Kendriya Vidyalaya, Hebbal, prevailed over Poorna Prajna (Indiranagar) 3-2 via tie breaker in the first round encounter of the Mahindra Youth Football Challenge under-14 inter-school football tournament at the BUFC grounds, Bangalore, on Tuesday.

After being held goalless at full time, the Hebbal School struck through Sachin Kumar, Ankit and Tyfon from the ‘spot' while only Sushruth N.M. and Arjun proved successful for Poorna Prajna.

Little Flower (Srirampura) downed Vani HS 4-2 with Kavi Arasan, Clinton (2) and Vignesh scoring for the winners, and Sushrat V Gopal and S. Vishal managing to reduce the margin.

In the third match, Karnataka Vidyashala and DPS (North) shared two goals in regular time before the former won the tie breaker 5-4, for a 6-5 verdict.

SWR beats ITI

South Western Railway (SWR, Hubli) recorded a 3-1 win over ITI in an ‘A' Division hockey league encounter at the KSHA stadium at Bangalore on Tuesday.

Manjunath struck a brace while Hasan Ali added one to the Railwaymen's tally. Senthil netted ITI's lone goal.

Radhakrishnan wins

Vivek Radhakrishnan, who clocked nine hours and 43 minutes, won the BCB ultra-marathon cycle race conducted last week. The race covered a total distance of 300 km, from Kanzkapura Road on the outskirts of the city to Chamundi Hills in Mysore and back.

Nine cyclists finished the race in under 12 hours. Dipankar Paul (10 hrs 45 mins) and Craig Raynes (10 hrs 52 mins) finished second and third respectively. Manjula Sridhar topped in the women's section, clocking 12 hrs 56 mins.

The event was organised by Bulldog Sportz.
