Assuring support:Horticulture Minister S.A. Ravindranath inaugurating a function in Davangere DAVANGERE: Horticulture Minister S.A. Ravindranath, who is also the district in-charge, urged farmers to not resort to the extreme step of committing suicide, assuring them that the Government would give fillip to attain self-sufficiency in food production. Inaugurating a function organised to discuss the various aspects of agriculture, here on Tuesday, Mr. Ravindranath said by 2020 the country's total requirement of foodgrains would be over 200 million tonnes and the Government had decided to give incentives to farmers to ensure that they continued to practise agriculture. He noted that there had been a production of over 135 million tonnes as of now. The Minister said he had noticed all over the State that farmers had a notion that more fertilizer meant better yield. He said he had directed the Agriculture Department to dispel such wrong notions and had asked officers to hold a special meeting at hobli-level to educate farmers on scientific methods of cultivation.
