having a ball:Children from across the country and Sri Lanka are taking part in the festival that aims to kindle the spirit of oneness and national pride. DHARWAD: The R.N. Shetty Stadium here was abuzz with activity on Tuesday as a large number of children from across the country and Sri Lanka presented an impressive cultural programme to mark the beginning of National Children's Festival. Karnataka is the first south Indian State to organise the six-day event in which 1,500 children are participating. The event, organised by the National Youth Project (NYP), New Delhi, in association with Karnataka Balvikas Academy and other like-minded organisations, aims to kindle the spirit of oneness and national pride among children. Bharat Ki Santan, which saw children from different States dressed in traditional costumes perform to verses rendered in 18 languages by octogenarian convener of the NYP Subba Rao, got a big round of applause from the audience. The programme conveyed the message that Indians are one in spite of all kinds of man-made barriers. Integration walk An integration walk taken was out in the evening by the children. Presiding over the inaugural ceremony, veteran journalist Patil Puttappa lauded the organisers for conducting such a unique programme in Dharwad. Mr. Puttappa spoke about the cultural, linguistic and religious diversity of India. Young people should build this country as a great nation, he said, and called upon the children to dream big and think big. Minister for Rural Development and Panchayat Raj Jagadish Shettar, who inaugurated the programme, said such programmes played a great role in achieving national integrity.
