KRISHNAGIRI: The first co-operative medical store in Krishnagiri town will be inaugurated on Saturday. Food Minister E.V. Velu will open the store and will also participate in the 57th Cooperative Week (first in the district after the office of Joint Registrar was bifurcated from Dharmapuri district in June this year) celebrations. After the fake medicine racket was busted, Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi had on the floor of the Assembly announced that 50 government medical shops would be established in the State. A. Krishnamoorthy, Joint Registrar of Co-operative Societies, told The Hindu that the one at Krishnagiri was among the 19 medical stores opened/to be opened in the State through Agricultural Marketing Societies. The co-operative medical stores would provide ‘genuine' medicines to the poor at affordable price. The fully air-conditioned store with a floor area of 444 sq.ft. will function on all days round the clock. The store will have two pharmacists and two assistants. They will work in shifts. Unlike the other medical shops, those run by the Co-operative Department will provide 15 per cent discount in the maximum retail price (MRP). As the store will function just opposite the Government Headquarters Hospital, all the life-saving medicines will be made available to people.
