Karnataka crashes out

Sports Reporter

Bangalore: Karnataka's participation in the 33rd sub-junior National volleyball championships came to a disappointing end at the Sree Kanteerava Stadium here on Friday, with both the boys' and girls' teams suffering quarterfinal defeat to Kerala.

The host was thoroughly outclassed in the boys' quarterfinal, failing to respond to Kerala's scintillating attacking play. Nazeem Najeeb and T.R. Sethu shone as Kerala won 25-19, 25-21, 25-23. The girls' encounter was an embarrassing rout as Karnataka, looking completely out of depth, lost 25-10, 25-17, 25-13.

Defending boys' champion Tamil Nadu, meanwhile, marched on into the semifinals after making short work of Mizoram.

Rajasthan was within two points of being dumped out of the competition in the fourth set before rallying to inflict a heartbreaking defeat on West Bengal.

Tamil Nadu will now face Kerala with Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan contesting the other semifinal.

In the girls' section, defending champion Kerala will face Rajasthan while Tamil Nadu will take on West Bengal.

The results: Boys: TN bt Mizoram 25-7, 25-10, 25-14; UP bt Uttarakhand 25-19, 25-19, 25-14; Rajasthan bt West Bengal 25-13, 22-25, 14-25, 26-24, 15-9; Kerala bt Karnataka 25-19, 25-21, 25-23.

Girls: Kerala bt Karnataka 25-10, 25-17, 25-13; West Bengal bt Maharashtra 25-18, 25-23, 25-10; TN bt Haryana 25-4, 25-7, 25-10; Rajasthan bt UP 22-25, 25-16, 25-22, 25-16 .
