Janamaithri a success : IGP

ALAPPUZHA: A training programme for police officials, Janamaithri Committee members and public representatives from the four police stations that were recently added to the Janamaithri Community Policing Scheme in the district began here on Saturday.

Inaugurating the programme, K.C. Venugopal, MP, said the growing trend of an unholy nexus between the police and politicians who did not have the good of the public in their minds would upset the smooth functioning of the law and order system. It was important for schemes like the Janamaithri Community Policing to work towards regaining the confidence of the people in the police.

Inspector General of Police (Ernakulam range) B. Sandhya, introducing the scheme, said the Janamaithri had already turned out to be a success in the district as it was across the State. Policemen would have to remember that their first priority was protection of the citizens, and this had to be done in right earnest. Schemes like Janamaithri would also ensure that citizens were aware of their responsibilities.

The community policing scheme was being extended from the existing two police stations in the district to a total of six with the police stations of Kuthiathode, Pulinkunnu, Haripad and Kayamkulam being added to the existing stations of Cherthala and Alappuzha North as part of the third phase of the community policing scheme, she said.
