MYSORE: Karnataka High Court judge and chairman of the Karnataka High Court Legal Services Committee N.K. Patil has pulled up officials for their failure to submit details about action taken with respect to issues such as solid waste management (SWM), water contamination, biomedical waste disposal and lake encroachment.

He was presiding over the regional Lok Adalat here on Saturday, which was attended by the Regional Commissioner, deputy commissioners, chief executive officers of the zilla panchayats and the heads of government departments of eight districts in Mysore division.

He was accompanied by Lok Adalat member A.N. Yellappa Reddy.

During the Lok Adalat, Mr. Patil expressed displeasure at the officials for not coming prepared to make presentations on their areas of responsibility.

Mr. Patil also took Environment Officer Niranjan to task when he failed to give details on the extent of ground water contamination near Nanjangud caused by the release of waste from a distillery. The officer replied that two cases, including one pertaining to ground water contamination and another on crop loss, had been registered against the distillery.

Mr. Reddy directed the Deputy Commissioner of Mysore and the Chief Executive Officer of the Mysore Zilla Panchayat to take immediate steps to address the problems faced by those affected by the water contamination in the nearly 150 sq. km area around the distillery.

Mr. Patil also had some words of praise — Mandya Deputy Commissioner C.K. Jaffer was commended for his “excellent” presentation by Mr. Patil and Mr. Reddy.
