‘There is a need to organise more programmes on folk art for the younger generation' Folk songs in dialogue form with social messages have a wider acceptance, says singer SHIMOGA: Well-known singer Shimoga Subbanna said on Friday that the poems of contemporary poets lacked mass appeal. He was speaking as the chief guest at a district-level folk festival organised by the Yuga Dharma Janapada Samithi at the Kuvempu Ranga Mandir here. He said the songs of unknown poets had emerged popular because people could relate to the experiences narrated. Folk songs, which were in the form of dialogues, found a wider acceptance because they spread social message. Mr. Subbanna said the poems of Shishunal Sherief were replete with relevant social message although they sounded comic. They spread the message that people should try to develop a sense of humility and simplicity. Television artiste Sumitra Pandit expressed concern that the younger generation was getting attracted towards western culture and lacked appreciation for the rich culture and heritage of the country. “There is a need to organise more and more programmes on folk art and music for the younger generation,” she said. Parents had a greater role in involving their children in folk programmes, she added. Television artiste Ramesh Pandit inaugurated the festival. District president of the Yuga Dharma Janapada Samithi D.S. Arun presided over the function. Director of Jana Shikshana Samsthe S.Y. Arunadevi and writer Rohini were present.
