Rekindling hope: Minister for Ports and Youth Affairs V. Surendran Pillai inaugurating an annual meet of adoptive families in Thiruvananthapuram on Sunday. — THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Minister for Ports and Youth Affairs V. Surendran Pillai said here on Sunday that the government would fully support efforts to plug loopholes in the existing process of adoption of children. He was delivering the inaugural address at the National Adoption Awareness Programme and Annual Adoptive Families meet of the southern region jointly organised by the Kerala Adoptive Families Organisation (KAFO), Thiruvananthapuram, and the Social Welfare Department. He emphasised the right of the adopted child to be aware of his/her identity and background. In reply to a request — from S. Haridas, president, KAFO — to provide adoptive families and children the same benefits that inter-caste marriage children receive, the Minister said it was a rightful demand and the government would take necessary action if a formal appeal was submitted. The KAFO was established in 1998 and now has more than 2,000 members.
