KOLKATA: Three supporters of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) were killed by suspected Maoists in two separate incidents in West Bengal's Paschim Medinipur district on Sunday.
Rahim Patar and Pashupati Singh were returning from a political rally, when a group of armed persons surrounded and abducted them.
Their bullet-ridden bodies were found at a distance from the spot a few hours later, Superintendent of Police Manoj Kumar Verma told The Hindu over telephone.
The incident occurred near Salboni.
Risk factor
“Rahim Patar was a member of the CPI (M) Zonal Committee. All leaders of the CPI (M) are at a risk from Maoists attacks,” Mr. Verma said.
In another incident, Ganesh Ahir was knifed to death. He was abducted from his home late on Saturday night and his body was found by villagers on Sunday morning, Mr. Verma said.
Appeal
Andhra Pradesh-based poet Varavara Rao, who is known for his support to the Maoist cause, appealed to the Maoists in West Bengal to released NGO worker Soumyajit Basu, a friend of Intelligence Branch officer Partha Biswas.
“The family of Mr. Basu spoke to me about his abduction and I have asked Maoists in West Bengal to release him if he is in their custody,” Mr. Rao told The Hindu over telephone.
No information
However, Mr. Rao said he had no information confirming that the duo were abducted by the Maoists. Nor did he comment on the fate of Mr. Biswas.
The two went missing from the Ayodhya hills region in Purulia district on October 22.
