Sacred:‘Chokka panai' being lit at a Siva temple in Ramanathapuram on Sunday. RAMANATHAPURAM: Karthigai Deepam, a festival of lights, was celebrated across Ramanathapuram and Sivaganga districts. While all houses were lit up with “agal vilakku” and scented lamps, “chokka panai” was lighted in all Siva temples. The houses were decorated with rows of clay lamps. A large number of people thronged the Siva temple in Ramanathapuram to witness chokka panai (bonfire). As per the tradition, they collected ash at the chokka panai site. The temples in Ramanathapuram witnessed heavy rush sinceearly morning. ‘Chokka paanai' (torch) was lighted in Sri Ramanatha Swamy temple in Ramanathapuram and other Siva temples.
