CHIKMAGALUR: Tension prevailed when the government scheme to provide subsidised rice to above poverty line cardholders failed to materialise here on Monday.
About 1,000 persons gathered in the premises of a defunct coffee curing works to collect the rice, only to be told that there was not sufficient stock. Of the 40 tonnes of rice sent to Chikmagalur, 32 tonnes were distributed last week. Congress workers blocked vehicular traffic near the AIT Circle demanding that rice be distributed as promised by the Government. They relented when the Assistant Commissioner promised that rice would be distributed next month.
