Bangalore Medical College gets new director

Staff Reporter

Vani Vilas Medical Superintendent is new BMCRI chief

We are endorsing Chief Minister's order, says Minister

Bangalore: Setting aside an earlier decision of the Governing Council of Bangalore Medical College and Research Institute (BMCRI), Chief Minister B.S. Yeddyurappa has appointed O.S. Siddappa as in-charge Dean-cum-Director of the institute. A Government Order was issued on Tuesday.

The Governing Council had, on August 3 this year, decided to extend the term of the institute's outgoing Dean-cum-Director G.T. Subhas till his superannuation and a Government Order was issued on August 17.

With Dr. Subhas's three-year tenure ending in May, the then Medical Education Minister Ramchandre Gowda had favoured an extension for Dr. Subhas till his superannuation. Such a system is being followed in all other medical colleges in the State.

But after S.A. Ramdas took over as Medical Education Minister, the contenders for the plum post resumed lobbying. Sources said the Chief Minister okayed Dr. Siddappa's name a few days ago amid all the political turmoil.

Mr. Ramdas told The Hindu that Dr. Siddappa's name was cleared by the Chief Minister and that he only endorsed the order. “We will soon start the process for appointing regular directors for all medical colleges in the State (all are in-charge directors now). Rules are being framed and the appointment would be done in a transparent manner. Whoever is eligible can apply when applications are called for,” he said.

With Medical Education Secretary I.M. Vittal Murthy on leave, in-charge Secretary M.K. Shankarlinge Gowda issued the order on Tuesday evening.

Mr. Gowda said Dr. Subhas would go back to head the Department of Neurology in BMCRI. “Such administrative changes are inevitable in Government service,” he said.

Dr. Siddappa, who is also the Medical Superintendent of Vani Vilas Hospital, assumed charge soon after the order was issued on Tuesday evening. He said he will continue to head Vani Vilas Hospital till the Governing Council appointed a new Medical Superintendent.

Dr. Subhas, who was appointed as the first Director of BMCRI after it was accorded autonomous status in 2007, said he had not yet decided on whether to continue in service. “I have not availed of leave in the recent past and I wish to go on leave for the moment,” he said.
