‘Discard kaavi and sport khadi' ‘Religious bodies have become fund collection centres' SHIMOGA: Representatives of various progressive organisations have taken strong exception to the open support extended by heads of Veerasaiva religious institutions to Chief Minister B.S. Yeddyurappa. They told presspersons here on Wednesday that it was unfortunate that certain heads of religious institutions instead of being engaged in the spiritual and religious pursuits had gone to the extent of supporting those who were out to “loot” public property. They asked them to come out of “sanyas”, discard their “kaavi” (saffron robes) and sport “khadi” if they were so much interested in active politics. They alleged that certain religious institutions instead of being engaged in imparting righteous conduct and education had been busy in fund collection centres. K.P. Sripal, district convener of the “Namma Hakku Horata Vedike”, criticised B.S. Yeddyurappa Government for being allegedly involved in the land scams which were being reported in an unprecedented scale. “What is disturbing is that Mr. Yeddyurappa is being supported by some leaders of religious institutions,” he said. He demanded that Mr. Yeddyurappa had no other alternative but to resign when he himself had admitted to had committed land scams. He urged the President and the Governor to initiate the steps for the dismissal of the “corrupt” BJP Government. Mr. Sripal said: “When it is accepted that all are equal in the eyes of law, there should be no hesitation in initiating the legal action against Yeddyurappa as he had admitted to the commission of land scams.” K.L. Ashok, State Convenor of the Karnataka Komu Souharda Vedike, criticised Mr. Yeddyurappa for justifying his action of de-notifying the government land in favour of his relatives on the plea that his predecessors also did it. He said it was condemnable that the heads of Veeerashaiva religious institutions which remained indifferent when thousands of people were rendered homeless following excessive rains and flash floods in north Karnataka last year were now throwing their lot behind Mr. Yeddyurappa when he was facing the threat of being ousted from his post.
