Chief Minister-designate Kiran Kumar Reddy all smiles at his residence in Hyderabad on Wednesday. HYDERABAD: Andhra Pradesh Assembly Speaker Nallari Kiran Kumar Reddy was invited by AICC observers for consultations at the Lake View Guest House here on Wednesday night before he was named by Pranab Mukherjee as the successor to K. Rosaiah as Chief Minister. Mr. Reddy alone will take oath on Thursday. The name of Mr. Reddy (50) was doing the rounds along with that of Union Minister for Urban Development S. Jaipal Reddy after Mr. Rosaiah announced his decision to quit. But, once Mr. Jaipal Reddy declared in New Delhi that he was not in the race and had no plans to come to Hyderabad, Mr. Kiran Kumar Reddy became the obvious choice. Flanked by AICC observer Ghulam Nabi Azad and Mr. Rosaiah, Mr. Mukherjee announced Mr. Kiran Kumar Reddy's name before a large group of journalists who camped outside the Lake View Guest House. “The Congress president Sonia Gandhi has chosen Mr. Reddy as the new CLP leader,” he declared. Mr. Reddy will resign from the post of Speaker by informing Deputy Speaker Nadendla Manohar, who has gone abroad, and later sending his letter to the Secretary, Legislature, S. Raja Sadaram. He will be sworn in as 16 {+t} {+h} Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh by Governor E.S.L. Narasimhan at Raj Bhavan at 10 a.m. on Thursday. Born in 1960, the Chief Minister-designate will be among the youngest to occupy the highest post in the government. An accomplished wicketkeeper-batsman, he played for the Hyderabad team in the Ranji Trophy tournament. Mr. Reddy represents Pileru Assembly constituency in Chittoor and is a four-time elect to the State Assembly since 1989. He was defeated only once – in 1994. Coming from a family which had been in the forefront of State politics, Mr. Reddy was made the Speaker after the Congress returned to power in 2009. He is the son of late N. Amarnath Reddy, who was Minister for Cooperation in Marri Channa Reddy's Cabinet during 1978-80. He studied in Hyderabad Public School (HPS), graduated from the Nizam's College and did his Bachelors in Law. He has one son and a daughter.
