NEW DELHI: The shocking incident of abduction and rape of a young Mizo woman in the early hours of Wednesday has created a sense of fear, particularly among the North-East communities living in different parts of the Capital. They have sought increased police presence in these localities at night. Madhu Chandra, spokesperson of the North East Support Centre and Helpline, said the authorities concerned had about a year ago promised to set up a dedicated helpline for those from the north-eastern region. “However, no action has been taken so far. Now that another girl has fallen prey, it is high time they set up the helpline headed by a police officer preferably from the North-East,” said Mr. Chandra. He said crimes against girls from the North-East are reported mostly from localities where they reside. “They live in areas like Munirka, Mahipalpur, Mohamadpur, Moti Bagh, Nanakpuram, Khanpur, Defence Colony, New Friends Colony, in and around Delhi University's North Campus, Gandhi Vihar and Nehru Vihar. Police Control Room vans can be stationed and patrolling intensified in these areas at night for deterrence,” he said, adding that the organisation's representatives would meet Police Commissioner B.K. Gupta on Friday in this regard. Mr. Chandra said he received information about the incident soon after the woman was abducted in Dhaula Kuan. “It is shocking that the culprits managed to reach Mangolpuri without being checked by night patrol teams even for once, despite the fact that the victim's colleague had alerted the Police Control Room. The policemen who reached the spot should have immediately alerted the other patrol teams in a bid to catch the abductors,” he said. The victim came to the Capital four years ago. She is being given trauma counselling by the Mizoram Welfare Association (Delhi). “The incident has created panic among the North-East communities. A similar incident of gang rape of a Mizo girl was reported in Dhaula Kuan in 2005,” he said. Mr. Chandra said the organisation would submit a memorandum of demands to Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit, who had promised to set up a hostel for the North-East working women last year.
