CP restoration project to restart

Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI: Connaught Place could be back to its former dug-up look again with the New Delhi Municipal Council planning to re-start all pending work which could not be completed as originally planned before the Commonwealth Games.

The list includes construction of an air-conditioning plant in the Middle Circle, construction of four new subways in Outer Circle and building of a common utility underground duct tunnel in the Middle Circle. A traffic plan to facilitate these works has also been forwarded to the traffic police.

In addition, the remaining facade improvement work in P Block, Regal Building and Scindia House would also be taken up by the civic body.

According to the civic body officials, some of the facade restoration work done earlier also requires a re-touch which would be undertaken in the second phase.

NDMC member Mukhesh Bhatt said: “The civic body has finalised the plan in consultation with the New Delhi Traders' Association. However, several traders requested us not to undertake major digging works during the festive season till Christmas as it would affect their sales by driving away potential customers due to the inconvenience. Keeping their request in mind we had put the works on hold so far but would be starting it soon.”

The radial roads, which connect Outer Circle to Middle Circle and Middle Circle to Inner Circle will be dug up to connect the underground tunnel to each of the blocks. Work on four radial roads would be taken up first.
