Staff Reporter
VIRUDHUNAGAR: Higher turn out was reported for the election conducted for employees of various transport corporations in the district on Thursday. The elections were conducted at seven centres in the district. The District Labour Officer, Vijay Kumar, was the presiding officer. Out of the total 2,692 voters, 2,632 turned up to exercise their franchise, the police said.
A total of 13 unions have fielded their candidates in the poll that would elect a union to represent the workers in negotiating with the transport authorities on issues like wage revision. The ballot papers had only the names of the candidates and their respective numbers and no symbols. Among the unions in the fray are the Labour Progressive Front, Anna Thozhirsanga Peravai, Centre of Indian Trade Unions, All India Trade Union Congress and Hindu Mazdoor Sangh. The election, conducted between 7 a.m. and 6 p.m., went off smoothly, the police added. The ballot boxes from all the centres were moved to Madurai with police protection.
