TIRUCHI: About 15,820 cusecs of water was diverted into the Coleroon River from Upper Anicut (Mukkombu) near here on Thursday even as incessant though moderate rain made for inclement weather across Tiruchi district right through the day. The steady rain persisted for most part of the day. There was a let up by evening though overcast and foggy conditions prevailed.

The rain spell in Tiruchi and its neighbouring districts continued to bring in some good inflow into the Cauvery River. On Thursday afternoon, the realisation at Upper Anicut was 15,821 cusecs and the entire quantum was diverted into the Coleroon River in view of the continued rain in the delta districts, Public Works Department officials told The Hindu.

PWD sources also indicated that the inflow into the Upper Anicut was expected to rise on Friday as surplus water from the Amaravathy Dam and the rain flow from the catchment areas downstream the dam would flow into the Cauvery River. Since there was no demand in the delta districts it has been decided to divert the entire flow into the Coleroon River, the sources said.

PWD officials said that there was no rain related damage in the district so far. The Agriculture Department too confirmed that there was no crop damage till now. Farmers in the district said that the rain so far has been beneficial for the samba crop though it could possibly affect the crop if the rain persisted .

Navalur Kottapattu received the maximum of 26 mm of rainfall in the 24-hour period ending at 8.30 a.m. on Thursday followed by Tiruchi Town 19.80 mm, Tiruchi Junction 19.20 mm, Koppampatti 13 mm, Marungapuri 10.20 mm, Musiri and Samayapuram 10 mm each. The district recorded an average of 7.62 mm of rainfall during the period.
