THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Vizhinjam International Seaport Limited (VISL) on Thursday notified a request for qualification (RFQ) for development of the proposed multi-purpose port at Vizhinjam. It also held an investors' meet here to explain the salient points of the project to prospective investors and bankers. Firms or consortium of firms interested in the design, engineering, financing and development of superstructure at the port and the operations, maintenance and management of the terminal can respond to the request for qualification. The investors' meet was attended by about 66 persons representing 33 banks and financial institutions. It was also attended by construction companies from India and abroad. The VISL proposes to raise Rs.2,500 crore as loan from the banks to finance the project, with State backing. VISL authorities told the participants that the project was feasible and flexible. Though there was demand for extending the time frame for submission of request for qualification, that could be considered only at a later stage. The port is proposed to be developed on the landlord model with a view to catering to container and other clean cargo. It will have a natural deep water harbour with draft of 18 to 22 metres within 10 nautical miles of the East-West international shipping axis.
