Rain brings copious inflow into Amaravathy and Thirumoorthy dams

Rain exposes poor infrastructure in the city; residents of ward 22 protest against water logging

Gushes out:Water flowing out copiously from Amaravathi Dam on Thursday morning following rain in catchment area.

Tirupur: Fair amount of rain in the catchment areas has brought good inflow into Amaravathy and Thirumoorthy dams on Thursday.

Public Works Department sources told The Hindu that the water level at Thirumoorthy dam stood at 1,324.09 ft against the full level of 1,337 ft. at 8.30 a.m. on Thursday.

Likewise, the dam had 1,439.97 mcft of water vis-à-vis the total capacity of 1,935 mcft.

“The storage has gradually increased since Sunday when the dam had only 1,142 mcft of water,” sources said.

In Amaravathy dam, the water level was at 88.03 ft (full level is 90 ft) with a storage of 3,868 mcft against the maximum capacity of 4,047 mcft.

Meanwhile, the rain had started exposing the poor infrastructure in the city. On Thursday morning, the residents of Ward 22 protested against the water logging in the area. They blamed the lack of good storm water drains in place for the situation.

Rainfall

The disaster management and mitigation department sources said that the district received an average rainfall of 13.91 mm during the 24 hours ending at 8.30 a.m. on Thursday:

Following is the rainfall recorded by various rain gauge stations in the district during the period: Mulanur- 43 mm; Kangeyam – 14.2 mm; Palladam -13 mm; Udumalpet – 11 mm; Dharapuram- 7 mm, Avinashi- 5 mm and Tirupur- 4.2 mm.
